Nokwanda’s Story
What inspired the idea of this business ? -As the founder of the business I (Nokwanda Nombembe) have always had the desire to be an entrepreneur -Love for beauty, hobby for creating garments, crash courses on creativity, experimenting with creativity books and magazines, helped with the journey of discovering the creative talent which I enjoyed thoroughly. -This led to the decision to study interior design and decorating from 1997 to 1998 -In 1999, I started doing interior projects for the family and this exposed me to more potential clients, and led to the start of the business. -At this time I did not have black role model in this kind of business. -On completion of my studies, I began experimenting with the design of my own house in Cape Town and this further exposed me to more clients amongst family members and friends.-We later converted our house into a guest house and that led to more business as more people were exposed to the interior design work done at this house. -Having gained sufficient confidence to start the business, it was only in 2002 that Nokwanda Interiors cc was formally registered. -My biggest breakthrough came when friends started to contract me to do their homes. Most of the work we continued to do came from referrals given by our friends and the website that showcased this work. -I have never looked back since. •From 2002 to 2008 the business was operating from home. During this period I gained a lot of experience through multi-tasking on all aspects of the business (consulting, project management, administration etc) •The business experienced a steady growth in turnover from the small beginnings of R290 000 pa in 2005 to the level of over R1 million pa in 2007 and 2008. •This prompted the thought and vision of expansion to a showroom concept that we have now grown into. nAll this translates to more than ten years of my academic and practical experience in the field of interior deco and design. nThis further translates to a greater confidence about my readiness and ability to branch out into a bigger business venture nSuch confidence being underpinned by extreme success on all projects undertaken, as supported by happy clients and their excitement about the quality and continuous appeal of the product delivered nThroughout this experience, the talent and passion for design has continuously been polished and matured to the extent of now being ready to blossom and act as the main catalyst that will take this business to greater heights. • Owners Personal ProfileNokwanda Nombembe
